Planting Our Garden

Our friends are being kind enough to let us use some of their land to do a garden this year (we promised to share the harvest). We have always wanted to have a nice garden but we just don't have the space to do one at our own place and my attempts at container gardening in the past have been kind of a flop.

 Today we tilled, raked, hoed and put in most of our plants: yellow crook neck squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes (some heirloom and some regular), zucchini, watermelon, cucumbers. We just have a few more things to get--okra, beans, maybe some herbs.

The little boys love the idea of a garden. I took them with me to pick up a few things at Home Depot this afternoon and they kept saying "This is the best day ever!" and wanting to help push the cart and put the plants in it for me.

Preparing the garden itself was hard work, but it felt great to be in the sunshine getting our hands dirty.

It was a beautiful day for it too--sunny but not too hot. We spent about three and a half hours getting it all done so now we mostly need to just keep it weeded and watered.
The boys all taking a breather and playing in the water from the furrows in the run-off ditch we dug.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that little bunnies and armadillos don't come and feast on our tender young plants.

After all that hard work we came home and I made pancakes for dinner--great ending to a great day.

Do you have a garden? What're you growing?

Today's poem:
"The Lake Isle of Innisfree" by William Butler Yeats

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a-glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

One of the best parts of gardening is when you can do it as a family. It cracked me up how much Sophia enjoyed "helping." She got a hold of the corn seeds and was planting it herself. Now we have corn popping up everywhere. Great memories.

It's true. Working together as a family is so satisfying. I'm actually looking forward to weeding and watering at this point. Is that crazy?

Sophia is so cute! Picturing rogue corn stalks all over the garden planted by her sweet little hands makes me smile.
