A couple of days after Halloween I was at Target and noticed they had all their Christmas merchandise out. (Don't get me started). The up-side to this is that it allows one a whole month before Christmas to use the merchandise for inspiration to make your own crafts. ;) I was admiring some pine cone trees there ($20 a piece) and decided it would be fairly easy to make my own version. Here's how I did it:
I gathered my materials: stryofoam cone, pine cone, scissors, glue gun.
Start by removing all the wings from the pinecone. You can probably break some of them off but will need the scissors for others. Trim them so that the ends are all straight across.

Apply a little hot glue to the underside of a pinecone wing and adhere it to the styrofoam cone.
Start at the bottom and work upwards, overlapping layers in rings around the cone form.

The top is a little tricky. You may have to trim the wings to a point to make the top. Or add a bow or star or something to camouflage the imperfection. ;)
Now, gather your materials for decorating. You can really do whatever you want for this part. I kept mine simple. My base is a condiment cup from Walmart--I got a pack of four for $0.88. I used some Krylon glitter spray paint and a little iridescent pewter-colored ribbon.
I did several layers of the spray paint and let it dry. Then I affixed a bow to the condiment cup with a glue dot and just set the tree on top. You could glue it down with hot glue if you want, but I didn't think it was necessary. Super simple.

That's it. This will be a fun addition to my Christmas decor this year. It didn't cost much and it was pretty simple to do. Wouldn't it be fun to have a whole glittery pinecone forest on your mantle? I think that would be magical.

Hi, I was just searching for this craft - I found a similar item for sale down in Palm Springs but without the glitter - it looked wonderful along with a twig tree and one made from ruffled newspaper. They used cardboard shaped into a cone instead of styrofoam. Selling it for $29. Ah, not thanks. I'll do it myself for FREE! Thanks for the tip on how to cut apart the pinecone!
